I've worked with chiffon a few times and though it's a pain in the rear the result is always worth it. I love this blouse and will have to make it for my lady… also meaning to make some button ups for the boy… so if it works for both, great!

Great tips! The one time I made something out of chiffon I felt like it got away from me! I need to try again with your advice. 🙂 The top looks so great, btw.

What about the hem? Did you use a rolled hem foot? I worked with a silky fabric this spring and had a devil of a time with a 1/8# rolled hem. I checked out youtube sites and learned tricks, etc., but bottom line, it was HARD, especially around corners. Your shirt hem looks lovely!

I was going to do a rolled hem but I didn't want to switch my serger thread 🙂 So I turned it 1/4" and pressed and then turned 1/4" again and stitched in place. Along the curved edged the fabric had enough ease to keep it all smooth. The starch really helped to keep the hem folded in place. It took a little longer but it was essentially as easy as hemming cotton.

Thanks for all the tips here. Spray starch is really god sent for this fabric. The hem looks very good as well. Must have been really hard especially considering it is curved?

Thanks for the great tutorial. I have always steered clear of chiffon but think I could give it a try now. Adorable shirt and with a new grandbaby on the way, I am looking for cool looking kids clothes, so I am glad I found your site.

I assume since this was made for a little girl that it’s a wash-and-wear fabric. What about silk chiffon? Can you use spray starch on it?

    1. Shauna

I have used spray starch on silk chiffon and it works well, just be sure to check your iron settings and test the fabric before you press the whole thing. This fabric is a cheap chiffon easy to wash and wear although it would would fine for woman as well.

im going to be making a skirt with the chiffon and a broadcloth hem. do you think itll be easier to sew the hem on top then fold over and sew again to keep the fraying to a minimum?
