Thank you for your blog. Really helped me give my six year old his first ever home cut. Ive never cut hair and so it was quite daunting. In lockdown something just had to be done to it!! Great result, thank you again for your step by step guide.

I just wanna say THANK YOU for sharing this! My husband has gotten his hair cut from his mother for years and years… now that we have moved away she is no longer around to do it. I have read, and read online sites about cutting hair but none have been easy to understand for me. This I understand! I will now attempt to cut my husbands and sons hair!!

Angie
http://

Thank you so much! I have just started to attempt to cut my two year old's hair. The first time was a bit rough, but this will help a lot. I have a question. I wear my hair with long bangs that go across my forehead. They seem to grow too long before it is time to get my next haircut. Is trimming them up something I can do myself, or am I just asking for trouble?

I am so glad this is helping! (or may soon help) Please feel free to ask if you come across any stumbling blocks and I will do my best to answer or do a more direct post with added help.
Nic… I am glad you ask about woman's bangs. I am going to do some basic woman's hair tips later this week so stay tuned, and yes bangs are one of the tips, you can do it at home.

Another great tutorial that I'm sure I'll be using, even if I have to rent a little boy to try it on. Looks like all of you had fun!

Great instructions. Thank you for sharing!

Could not help but pin this to my pintrest board. Thanks so much for sharing. This is so easy to understand. I have been cutting my son's hair (even though I'm terrible at it) because if I ever take him somewhere, they end up butchering it!! Worse than I do! This is great, so thank you.
Anna
http://lassothemoon.typepad.com

Love it! Love, love, love it! In all my years of mothering I've never been able to afford taking my kids (or hubby) to get a haircut. Now maybe I can get beyond the buzz!

This is very informative. But, I don't get the part with the bangs where the scissors are "twisted" so the bangs are textured. If you're able to clarify I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

    1. Shauna@shwinandshwin

It just means that you snip in towards the hair instead of cutting it flat. The "twisted" just comes from your wrist twisting to the side to cut at the point.

Do you have any tips for boys that HATE having their hair cut, good mood or not. My son has sensory issues and the feel of scissors around his ears or neck just freak him out (he can tolerate the clippers for most of it). It has been a source of angst for many years! I was having some success with one of those kids salons until the last time I went I got a witch and she totally freaked him out

I feel your pain! We have dealt with similar sensory challenges with my son who hates the clippers for ANY part of a haircut. I would try putting ear bud earphones in his ear and letting him listen to music or play a video game. It may mask the cutting sound while distracting him to keep him calm. Also, hold the closed scissor blades in your closed fist for a few seconds before working around the

Hi! Found this post via Pinterest and will definitely be using the tips the next time I cut my boys' hair. One question: When you talk about using thinning scissors, you say to lay them against the hair to cut. What do you mean by this? Against the head? If not, how close to the head do you hold them to cut? One of my boys has VERY thick hair and a cowlick right at the top of his crown, so I

I used this on my 8 year old son last night with great results! I usually just buzz him, but I don't love the way it looks. All day I keep seeing how handsome he looks and feeling so happy about it! Thank you!

I have four little boys that I cut their hair at home and I can't wait to try this out – Thanks!!

  15. SammyJoe

Thank you so much!! I have 4 boys and I either pay 10-15 to have it cut orI buzz it myself and this really help me out and I will be trying it soon! 🙂

This is great! I just followed your instructions to cut my 8- and 11-year-old boys' hair. It was easy and it looks great! They were tired of being buzzed and I was tired of waiting for trips to Mamaw's to let her cut it. Thank you!

    1. Shauna@shwinandshwin

Awesome! I am so glad you did it!

I am curious how you use the comb to blend with a crew cut that is either longer all over or longer on top. If you cut against the comb it will be that short length right? We deal with several cowlicks and curls that do better when longer. Any tips for this cut at about a 2-3" length?

  18. Jo Ramirez

I use kids safety scissors on my squirmy boy in the areas I'm nervous about cutting him. We also found that loading a short show on our smart phone helped a lot.

Thank you so much for this post! I cut my husband hair with clippers but have never been able to get the "Clark Kent" look I adore on him (as he does look like superman <3). I have always been a little afraid to try scissor cutting his hair but this is super clear and easy for me to follow. He will now be getting a regular cut that I can enjoy and so will my son, now that he has

Super cute – thank you so much!

Thanks so much. Do you have any youtube videos that also show these tips? Especially the tips about notching the front so the front "bangs" don't look like a bowl cut. And the part about thinning very thick hair.

Thanks, from a mom of 4 boys; 5 if you count my husband. I cut their hair roughly every 5-8 weeks. (depending on how busy life gets; this summer their hair

Nice tutorial! I have a video on my website that shows you how to do the "Bieber" cut. https://www.howtocutchildrenshair.com It's near the bottom of the page so you'll need to scroll down a bit. There are lots of other how to videos and lessons on the site also.

  26. Debbie

    Are you a hairdresser?

    1. Shauna@shwinandshwin

Hi Debbie! Yes I am, for almost 10 years now, although since having kids I stay home and just cut their hair these days.

  27. Unknown

I just cut my son's hair for the first time ever using your tutorial. He's 2 1/2 and kind of squirmy so it wasn't super easy, but it turned out okay. I need to work on my blending skills in the back a little, but other than that, he looks pretty good. Thanks so much for posting.

  28. rhibrix2

Where do you recommend buying siscors? Beauty supply like Sallys? Ive also seen some at Walmart…TIA.

  29. Linda

This was a great tutorial, thank you! My son currently gets the buzz cut which thankfully he looks good in but I'm sure we will outgrow this stage since he is currently 2.5 years old.

  30. Jackie Simpkins (Augusta, GA)

Just followed your advice and gave my son the best hair cut he's ever had! Thank you!

  31. Jacquelyn

Question about the blending, do you hold the comb right against the head or out a bit?

This was SO helpful for cutting my 15 month old twin boys’ hair! Best haircut I’ve done on them yet. THANK YOU!
