Looking through the pictures I was thinking "I really wish she would have a pattern for that jacket/sweater/cardigan her daughter is wearing!" lol. I hope that is the new fall/winter pattern coming out soon! So excited to try out the zipper. I have two pairs of lovely ritas already cut and ready to sew. Glad I didn't start sewing yet 🙂 Yay! Thanks for all your great patterns and

I've never sewn a zipper in clothing, but this make me want to try it! Next time I make some Lovely Rita's, I may give a zipper a go. Thanks, Shauna, for a great tutorial!

Great tutorial! Thanks for this! As my kids get older I think you're totally right…not having a functioning fly makes the clothes look more home-ec. Can't wait to try your technique. Thanks!

Oh look at my cute little dalmatian! Why haven't I ever seen her where this little gem?

Why is there bunching at the bottom of the zipper where the two seams meet? Surely this can't be right and I've never seen it on retail. Also, shouldn't the stitching go all the way across to the other seam at the bottom of the fly? I guess it can't if there is that bunch there.

IMO, the best and easiest fly zip tute on the web is Sandra Betzina's on the Threads

I love your tutorial, and the polka dot fabric is great. But there’s one thing that is not quite clear. After you stitch the zipper to the fly facing, you make a fold on the shield-side of the pant front; your text is, ” Fold the center edge under by the seam allowance”, which to me indicates to fold along the CF seam line. In the photo, it looks like you fold the seam allowance (SA) in half, lengthwise; that is, you fold it so the cut edge meets the seam line.

Which do you really mean? You want to fold so that the two sides of the zipper meet perfectly when the fly is finished. To me, where you make the fold depends on the width of the zipper tape.

One more thing: Most tutorials sew the zipper on the shield side first (with the shield). Then when you sew the zipper to the facing side, you sew only to the facing to secure the zipper tape, then finish with the top stitching along the curve of the facing. This makes it easier to sew near bottom of zipper – easier to keep the other side from getting caught in the stitching.

When you fold you are folding the center front and it is folded under by the amount of the seam allowance so it matches the clip you made to the seam allowance earlier. You do want the zipper to meet in the middle when it’s done, but the fold placement won’t be effected by the zipper tape size since you are sewing along the teeth anyway. As for other tutorials I am sure there are many that do it differently there is more than one way to do many different sewing techniques, but if you find another way easier to follow or understand you can do it that way for sure. This is the way I found it easiest for me. Hope that helps!
