I decided to make a cute little clutch with a snap tab to hold my keys in place. (because I can’t be the only one who ALWAYS looses her keys in a purse, even in a small clutch I swear they vanish) And a cute key ring for my keys as well.
The little clutch is perfect for date night, or when I run to a store real quick and don’t want to lug around my huge purse/bag/diaper bag. It is also cute and small enough that I can toss it in my big bag and it keeps all the little things safe from getting lost in the bag. Dual purpose and super cute. I loved making it out of old jeans too because denim is nice and durable but used denim is also soft.
You will need:
Old Jeans
Lace
Feathers
Key ring
9″ Zipper
1 heavy duty snap (with snap kit)
6 small plastic beads
Thin leather strap
Thick leather strap (5″)
1/4 yard fabric for lining (optional you could also use the denim for lining)
Hot glue gun (and glue)
To start cut your pieces out. You will need 2 rectangles for the lining and 2 rectangles for the outside. As well as 2 zipper tab pieces. (follow diagram above)
For the sewing, with right sides together sew the zipper tab pieces to the each end of the zipper.
Then press the zipper tab upward so it covers the end of the zipper. Trim the sides so it’s even with the zipper.
With right sides together place the zipper along the top edge of one outside rectangle. Sew along the edge sewing as close to the zipper teeth as possible.
Press zipper up flat.
With right sides together place the other outside rectangle along the top edge of the zipper and sew in place.
Press open flat. Cut lace strips so they are the length of the bottom of each outside rectangle (10″) then sew the lace in place along the top and bottom edge.
Take a 5″ thick leather strap, add a snap using the snap tool kit. (instructions come with the tool kit) add them about 2″ apart so when they are snapped it creates a loop.
Unzip the top zipper. Then with right sides together match up the front and back outside rectangles. If your jeans have a tag that you like this is a great place to re-use it. (I got mine from the back pocket of the jeans I unpicked the seam to keep it in tact) place it along the edge with the right side towards the inside. Also place the leather tab with the snap so the snap is toward the inside and the end is just flush with the raw edge. Then sew along the sides and bottom. Clip the corners.
Then turn it right side out and you will see the cute little tag.
On the other side you should have a little leather strap hanging out.
For the lining. With right sides together, sew along the sides and bottom edges. Then fold the top edge down by 1/2″
Place the lining into the bag so the wrong sides are together. Pin in place so the folded edge is along the bottom of the zipper. Using a slip stitch, or invisible stitch sew the lining in place. You can also sew it in place with your sewing machine if you would rather.
Then you have a nicely secured lining.
For the key ring. Take a 7″ strip of thin leather, place it around the key ring and secure the loop with a dab of hot glue.
Then cut 5″ strips and glue them around the center strip in a circular pattern. Then take another small strip and wrap it around the top of all the strips to cover them.
Slip some beads on to the end of a strip. Add a dab of glue to the end of a feather and then slip the feather into the beads to secure them in place.
There you have it a cute little clutch and key ring.
