My kids love to offer me a challenge. So when Abbey wanted a Beverly Hills sweatshirt, and we had a plain white Hanes sweatshirt sitting in my blanks pile we got to work.
Supplies Used
- Hanes Sweatshirt
- Dye
- HTV
- HTV Puff (notes on my feelings of this below)
- Silhouette cutting machine
- Circuit heat press
How to Transform the Sweatshirt
Step 1: Dye the shirt. She didn’t want white. I had a few bottles of dye on hand and she decided Blue with just a splash of purple. We dipped the shirt in the soda bath per the blue dyes instructions and then we poured on the dye. We did it in a tie dye like fashion, but made sure to cover the whole shirt by squeezing it and letting the dye saturate. We also only left the dye on for maybe 3 min. before rinsing it out. This was so we could keep the color as light as possible. Like with most tie dye you never really know what you are going to get until you wash it. After the wash and dry we were pleased with the end result.
Step 2: Cut out and add HTV. I used a combination of regular vinyl and “puff” vinyl. I purchased some puff vinyl from amazon. I LOVE the colors, but I have never been able to get it to “puff” nicely. I have done everything. Followed the instructions that were provided, followed several different troubleshooting youtube videos. I can get a little sample square to puff perfectly, and then I will do the exact same thing and the real thing will go a funky. Like a brain or wrinkly, or just wrong. I gave up trying to get it to be perfect and embraced the texture it would provide. The “Beverly Hills” has a streamer vibe and I kind of dig it. So I stitched down the middle of the words to emphasize the texture.
