Inspired By Boy Challenge and guest post

Since someone has to go, this week it was April from Wildflowers & Whimsy It’s always hard to say goodbye especially when everyone is so talented. This week’s challenge? We thought with all the “girly” challenges it was only fair to pull out of the hat (or velvet bag ha ha) The Inspired by BOY challenge. Of course, as per usual we want to be and stay gender neutral and understand that not all of our contestants have boys in their life so that is why it is called inspired by boy, where they are free to design for either gender using Boy as the inspiration. I can’t wait to see what they come up with this week! To kick off Inspired by Boy week we have an amazing guest and sponsor this week. Cheri from I am Momma Hear me Roar. I am so excited about this! Cheri’s blog is one of the first craft blogs I discovered when I realized there was a world of craft blogs out there. It was an instant favorite and I just love her projects! She has inspired me to take on a lot of projects I didn’t think I could do and she inspired me to sew for my Boy more. Here is Cheri with an amazing Tutorial for us:

Hello!  I’m Cheri from I Am Momma – Hear Me Roar and I’m here with a simple boy idea for you today.  When I look at really stylish boy clothing I try to figure out what it is about the clothing I like.  It’s usually in the details.  So today we’re going to play “Pimp my Polo.”  Yes, that’s right.  We’re going take a plain boy polo shirt and spice it up a little.

Boy ideas can be tricky.  You can’t just roll up a rosette and sew it on.  You have to think a bit harder.  You also don’t want to go over the top with it.  Okay, enough blabbing.  Let’s get to it.  I took a plain polo that looked like this.

After sewing them I inverted them and pressed them flat.  Then I held them up to the shirt and cut them the right length (cutting from the open end).  You want them to be about a fourth of an inch too long so you can sew them on properly.  You’ll see what I mean.  I sewed them on as shown, using a tight zig zag stitch so the unsewn end wouldn’t fray.

Now you’ve got this….

Just fold it over, concealing the stitching.

Then you connect the opposite end by sewing on a button.

Lastly, I added a number to the shirt, since he’ll be four when it fits him.  I used my Silhouette for this, but you can easily create a freezer paper stencil.  If you’ve never tried freezer paper stenciling, click HERE for my video tutorial of it.  And here’s my little guy trying it on.  It’s bit big, but he’s got five months to grow into it and then a full year to wear it.
