I have been wanting to make Abbey some more tulle skirts, I have made a few in the past like this one, and this one or this one. While I like them I always have one issue, tulle is stiff and crunchy, and it gets all mashed up and messy looking. Then I found swimwear lining mesh.
It was perfect, it has that light and airy quality to it but it’s soft and drapey. So I made a triple layered circle skirt. With plenty of twirl factor without being super full.
Abbey was pretty thrilled with the twirl factor and without the crunchy factor so it’s easy to wear, and would be a perfect swimsuit cover since it’s made from swim friendly fabric 🙂
Perhaps you have made a circle skirt before, they are surprisingly easy and there are a million great tutorials out there, like this one here are the measurements I used for this one for my daughter roughly 4T. I cut the waist line down 3.5″ then I cut 3 circles all with the same waist line, one 9″ long, one 11″ long and one 12″ long. (so over all my skirt was 12″ long) I followed Dana’s tutorial to put the circle skirt together only I layered the circles on top of each other smallest on top. I also skipped finishing any of the edges and hemming the bottom since I used a knit that would’t fray, I also used a decorative fold over elastic for the waist.
I think it would work great in any knit fabric since there is no need to hem the knit and they make for an incredibly soft skirt.
I just love the soft layered look to layers and the raw edge look to the knit.
Perfect for our little ballerina. (side note I am ready for spring to come here already…)

That's wonderful! My daughter is going through her twirly phase; I know I'll be making some of these for spring. I hadn't ever though to use swimwear mesh before, that's a great idea.

It works so perfectly! My next plan is to dye it.

[…] For the skirt I cut out several layers of lace and tulle in a few different lengths of cicrle skirts and then added elastic on the inside and a ribbon on the outside so it would look pretty and could tie in back. (not needed but I like it) If you need more help with a circle skirt and the layers check THIS POST […]
