Sometimes as people we do things that are quite possibly against our better judgement, and we know this but we do them anyway. You know what I’m talking about? So awhile back I made a series of questionable decisions and they have some how lead to Penny wearing gold pants. (which make me say “it’s hammer time” and my kids look at me like a creature from the black lagoon both references are over their head) You see my husband’s office threw a holiday party in December. Not just any holiday party but a themed holiday party. A dress up themed holiday party. This year it was Vegas. I had just picked up my copy of Kate’s Penelope Peplum Pattern and I had a vision… This vision actually.
I had 2 days to make my vision happen so I knew I couldn’t order some great (but likely crazy expensive) fabric. So I went to Joanns, and there it was, gold, spandex, dance wear fabric. This would be the point of bad decision making. I stared at it. I felt it. I thought about it. Then I said yes! This will be perfect! (wrong) and I carried it happily to the cut counter. To which they asked how much I wanted. I wasn’t sure, I had never looked, clearly since I almost never sew for myself I really wasn’t sure how much it would require so I said I would take 2 1/2 yards. (way wrong) So home I went with fabric that should have likely never been made. I got home made my top (out of about 1 yard) and tried it on. I looked like a figure skater from the 80’s, which sadly was not the theme of the party. But you know what? I wore it anyway (yet another questionable decision) spandex is unforgiving and clearly not designed for my body, I might as well of worn my swimsuit. Then I found myself left with 1 and half yards of gold spandex. A sane person would have thrown it away.
I am however am not that sane. (clearly) so one night while doing some late night sewing, I was digging through the stash and out came the gold fabric. To which I thought “hey I bet this would make awesome leggings” (for my girls not me) So I whipped out the Apple Loungewear pattern for the leggings which would go great with the Apple Loungewear top I had made not to long ago. (the heart was to support sweet Ruby) The next day I put the leggings on Penny. I laughed… and laughed, and laughed some more. I sent a text to my husband and told him that clearly I had lost it.
Then, as seriously questionable decisions go, I kind of fell in love with them. Her cute little bum and skinny little legs totally rocking out the over the top gold shiny spandex leggings. So I decided I may just make a pair for Abbey too, with a long tunic I think they could be awesome.
So what do you think? Do you have the gold fever too? (the everything looks good if it’s gold fever)
hey june
These are solid gold! 😉 Seriously, gold is the best. I'm really digging it right now too. I think you need this sign, I just ordered it: https://www.etsy.com/listing/171407480/the-original-holla-script-handmade-wood

Those are fantastic! My friends son asked for Gold "Michael Jackson" pants, which I made for him last month. The whole time I was thinking… this just doesn't seem ok. But he loved them.

Seriously questionable decisions are sometimes the best decisions 🙂

I love them! Kids can pull off stuff that adults never could! Might as well have fun with it!
Shauna@shwinandshwin
They totally can!

I love them too! I am also a victim of questionable JoAnn purchases – for the zoolander film petit especially. TWO types of snakeskin, a sparkly leopard print…I looked like a crazy person. But anything looks cute on kids.

Is there something about the Joanns zone that makes super questionable decisions seem like brilliant decisions? It's not the first time I have bought something thinking it would be amazing until I got home and wondered what the heck I was thinking 🙂 (pink pleather pants have yet to happen though)

I actually love the outfits you guys wore to the party – totally awesome – and the baby leggings are pretty awesome too. I can just so totally relate to having a reality that doesn't quite live up to the vision…
Shauna@shwinandshwin
Thanks! They were fun outfits to wear for the night, but I am not confident enough in the gold spandex top to rock it any other time 🙂

Oh those are all sorts of awesome right there!!<br />Yes. Gold spandex is perfect in every way (for kids, uh and Xanadu of course).<br />~Michelle

I have been wanting to make of pair of gold pants for my granddaughter ever since I first read this! I picked up my fabric today!<br />I think I am going to use the Hosh pants pattern by Lou Bee. Do you think that will work or should I stick to leggings? Also, I've never sewn with this type of fabric, would I use a ballpoint needle and treat it like I do a knit? All the best, Betsy
