Leather+Fur Baby Booties || Free Pattern

I don’t think it’s any surprise by now that I really love making baby shoes. (Once upon a time before this blog I used to make and sell baby shoes) I just love dreaming up new designs and styles, although a lot of them happen by accident. Like these for example, I was playing around with shapes trying to make some tennis shoes, and they were totally flopping, but what came out was an even easier and cuter style. These little booties are something I designed for my soon to arrive little nephew, being that he is a cold weather baby I thought he would need something cozy and warm for those feet.

The pattern I made is for newborn feet it’s small. You could pretty easily make it larger, you just need all of the pieces to fit together but there are only 3 so it should be easy to figure out, should you want them larger. Also note the booties have a tie, I knot the ties at the ends so the lace can’t slip out, and for a newborn I don’t worry that they will untie the lace but it’s still a good idea to not let them sleep with it.

To make the Fur+Leather Baby Booties you will need:

FUR+LEATHER Baby Booties Pattern

Fur (faux fur used here)

Leather (I used real leather but faux leather is fine)

Felt (for soles)

Leather Hole Punch

Leather Sewing needle

Teflon sewing foot (optional but very helpful, a little tape on the bottom of a sewing foot also works)

To start cut out all of your pieces. Then sew the fur and leather pieces together all around the edges. For the soles I did felt on the inside since it’s easier to sew, and adds a little stiffness to the sole. You want to stitch very close to the edges here, and then I trim any of the fur that is sticking beyond the leather edge. Also when stitching them together you are stitching the wrong sides together. The raw edges are all exposed on these shoes. If you want to sew right sides together and turn them then you will need to add seam allowance to the pieces.

Next punch holes in the heel piece. I did 3 holes along each side 2 are purely decorations and the top one in the top corner is the one that will tie.

Now with RIGHT sides together sew the heel along the back of the sole. Match up the center heel with the center of the heel of the sole.

Now your heel piece should look like so.

Next with RIGHT sides together sew the toe piece. The edges of the toe piece will overlap the heel piece.

Then the bootie will look like so.

Turn the bootie right side out and roll the seams in between your fingers to smooth it out.

For the tie, I took 3 strands of embroidery floss and braided them together. I tied a small knot at either end.

Then slip the ties through the holes. Then I add a larger knot (double knot) to the tie so it can’t slip back through the hole.

Then you simply tie and go. I LOVE a simple baby shoe. And even though I love working with leather, and fur, these could be made from any fabrics really, just remember if you want the raw edges toward the inside you need to add seam allowance.

But seriously, the fur… just so cozy.
